on the radio

The activities of Fundación Interchange have been the subject of three radio programs by Dutch broadcasting station VPRO's ethnomusicology programme "De Wandelende Tak." As its archives are available online, you can listen to them. All one-hour programs are in Dutch, but they contain lots of music, so you will still be able to enjoy them.

The first programme, 'venezuela', gives an overview of our research on Venezuelan music, society and culture. It includes some of the country's many ethnic and regional styles, Afro-Venezuelan, criollo, folklore, parrandas, joropo, and pan-Caribbean.
The second programme, 'een muzikaal eldorado', has more of a focus on indigenous cultures and features Hiwi, Yukpa and Piaroa music.
The third programme, 'de vader des vaderlands', documents how its president Hugo Chávez has become the subject in the tradition of praise and protest song in Venezuela. There are many songs in many different styles singing his praise or criticizing him.

programme 1: venezuela

drumming Walter Slosse, producer of "De Wandelende Tak," talks with Fundación Interchange's researcher Bartolomé Duijsens about the latter's fieldwork in Venezuela. Venezuela is a society in turmoil, on the verge of a social explosion, where the many different ethnic and social groups express their identity through music. You can hear traditional genres like joropo, the cumaco drum-dance and the parranda, but also Afro-Venezuelan-pop fusion, and even a protest-song.

programme 3: de vader des vaderlands

changa
